The AOUG Vice-Chancellor Professor Brenda Gourley Award for Business Studies

2015 recipient Charles Mbalyohere

The winner of the AOUG Vice-Chancellor Professor Brenda Gourley Award for Business Studies was Charles Mbalyohere, for his research in Corporate Political Activity (CPA) in Uganda’s Electricity Industry. He started his OU experience with an MBA which he did while based in Germany. During its final phase, he decided on a major professional change to engage more with international management consulting. In 2005 he accepted an Associate Lectureship with the OU, shuttling between Frankfurt, Vienna and Brussels to tutor a new generation of management students. He underwent a metamorphosis to become a 'global citizen' - he became increasingly culturally adaptable and was comfortable relating with people from all sorts of backgrounds. He was convinced that the MBA and the Lectureship contributed a lot to shaping this profile. At this time, he also became the founding President of a non-governmental organisation.

Still convinced that he needed to aim higher, he took on a full time PhD research programme in strategic management at The Open University Business School and has presented at some prestigious international management conferences.
