Awards for Regions and Nations 2014

Sarah Davies Region 13 – The South East

Sarah had left school at sixteen with ‘O’ levels, worked in an accounts department, and then as a PA in a transport firm. She met Nigel, married and had two children, Hannah and Rhys. After she had Rhys, she decided to train as a childminder. Her passion for learning ‘clicked in’. She took a CACHE Level 3 Child Minding Course and became interested in learning again. That led to a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, so she could tutor other childminders. When that finished, she decided she wanted to learn more about her subject area. She started studying with the OU and decided to work through the Early Years Pathway.

Sarah had been ill for nearly three years before she was diagnosed with small bowel cancer.  She had also been through the pressures of caring for a Mum with dementia and helping her father to adjust. Although she had started chemotherapy in March, she carried on with assignments with support from her tutor and achieved a BSc Open in July. She was presented with her Award at her home in Rainham, Kent by AOUG Publicity Officer, Pam Pearce. Her husband, Nigel was also there.
