Stuart with Elizabeth Mullett, OU in the South

Awards for Regions and Nations 2014

Stuart Monks Region 02 – The South

Stuart managed to complete his degree despite having both his own health issues and other personal issues, which meant that in particular he found attending tutorials difficult and struggled initially with the eTMA system.  These were compounded by his wife, Heather, being diagnosed with cancer. Stuart had to become her carer and completed much of his studying in hospital waiting rooms whilst Heather was having treatment.  It was Heather who nominated Stuart for the Award, as she was very aware of how he had struggled to complete his studies. He had been most keen not to be given any dispensation by The Open University despite the various problems he experienced whilst studying, including the death of his father from cancer just before his final exam.

The presentation was made at the local village hall by Jayne Littlejohn, Executive Representative for Region 02, and Colin Reed, Local Contact for Oxford, and attended by family members including Heather, Stuart’s mother and his daughters. Elizabeth Mullett, Assistant Director Student Services from The Open University in the South, said a few words after the presentation. It was followed by a buffet lunch arranged by Stuart’s family.
