Association of Open University Graduates
Honorary Life Membership
Patricia Cowling has been a member of AOUG since the early days, in the South East, the West Midlands and now in Europe. She has always been actively involved within these areas arranging events and supporting the Executive Representative at the time.
Patricia has until recently served on the Executive Committee for over an eighteen year period and at various times has undertaken the roles of Executive Representative for West Midlands, Vice-Chairman, Chairman, Treasurer, Company Secretary and finally Development Officer. Patricia was also for many years the editor of AOUG's academic Journal, a publication not produced now due to financial restraints, but in its time it was accepted by all the UK University Libraries with their archives of academic papers.
Patricia has been in office over some difficult periods in our history and with dedication and determination has pulled us through the various issues, including negotiating successful ends to two major issues that, at the time, could have risked damaging AOUG's reputation with the OU. On a positive note, Patricia was involved with registration of AOUG for Incorporation, introduction of Life Membership and the safeguarding of our investments.
Since retiring from office, Patricia has continued to act as Local Contact for Europe and, although neither an elected or co-opted position, has undertaken much of the work of an Executive Representative, contacting lapsed members, welcoming new members, finding volunteers for degree ceremonies, arranging post degree ceremony events and producing regular European Newsletters as well as providing both OMEGA and the website with European information.
Patricia offered to organise an AGM in Europe but when the Association financial constraints made this impossible, she organised a purely social weekend on a smaller scale instead. Then in addition to all of this, Patricia volunteers each year to assist at the Versailles degree ceremony, attends every AGM weekend and every Award Ceremony and Foundation Lecture and has offered to help working on the Trading Stand on many occasions. Thus before office, during office and since office, Patricia has worked tirelessly for our Association, an Association that she passionately believes in.
