Virginia Feeney, better known to AOUG as Ginny, has been a member of AOUG in Yorkshire since the very early days of AOUG. She is the AOUG in Yorkshire Walking Group Co-ordinator, a role she established for herself more than twenty years ago when she offered to organise a local walk and she has been doing this quietly ever since.
Each year Ginny organises an Annual Walkers' planning weekend when, not only does she ensure that two day walks are arranged, but she arranges the planning meeting to discuss ideas and volunteers for the walks for the coming year and also an Annual Walkers Celebration meal, when non walkers are invited to attend too. These weekends often centre around Ginny's house, where walkers are offered beds for the night, or spaces on the floor for sleeping bags, and a hearty breakfast before their walks.
Throughout the year the walking group organise walks of varying lengths, some involving youth hostel stays such as for stages on the Pennine Way, or B&B in local villages for other long distance walks. For each of these long walks Ginny is usually the one to co-ordinate the accommodation and arrange the transportation of overnight luggage by non-walking volunteers. Then there are the weekend walks, or single day walks, more accessible to the average walker and even the T-Shop walks, all between two and five miles designed for those of us less active. Ginny has a knack of welcoming all and making each one, how little stamina they have, to feel they have achieved something.
Ginny has held a group of AOUG members together, not just through the love of walking but through a belief in people and in our Association supporting members through personal crisis, or physical or mental illness. Ginny offers a quiet calm confidence and creates a unique bond. In addition to the actual duties she has imposed upon herself as Walking Group Co-ordinator, Ginny sends articles on walks to AOUG in Yorkshire for the local Newsletter, the website or for OMEGA. She has given AOUG lectures on her personal walking adventures and has offered her services at other events. However Ginny does not see her twenty years of service to the AOUG in Yorkshire Walking Group, as anything special. She is a dedicated, reliable AOUG member whose work needs to be acknowledged.
